Baja California

The same jumbo for little Fiji takes us back to Sydney. Julia and Holger are already waiting for us and organized our accomodation, comfortable. After two days with interesting and inspiring conversations, some good laughs and a little surf session at the famous bondy beach our journey continues with a stop over in LA to Baja California. It’s not California as many people back home think, it’s Baja, the southern extension and belongs to Mexico. The trip is long. 3 hours sitting in the plane and waiting for the start in Sydney, 13 hours flight, immigration to the US, terminal change or terminal search, check-in, security check, 4 hours flight to Baja and 2 hours bus drive to Todos Santos. The good think, the flight to LA was with a new Airbus, which offers an unknown comfort and media collection.

Arrived in Todos Santos, we get picket up by a completely waisted Carsten… 😉 He has just arrived from his something over 3000km drive down from Vancouver Island. The first hours we spend together are from both sides quite spaced. On the secound day in Baja we pack again the essential for camping and drive up north where the close hurricane promises some good surf. Due to the weather happening the cloud formations and light gives to the whole sceen a mystical touch. The time for shopping was short, so we just got two stakes, some chicken, salt, pepper, beer and some water.

The following days we spend checking out the area of Todos. Our base, Carstens layed back home. We met Carsten travelling in Indonesia, he invited us to come and stay with him if we happen to pass bye in Baja. We felt like home from the beginning. Step by step we find out where the surf is, who makes the best tacos in town, where the internet cafe is and where we get the fruit for breakfast. Besides that Carsten is the most relaxed host you can immagine, we share some profound and philosophical conversations. His way of seeing things and oppenness opened up some interesting new perspectives for us.

For days we try already to find a solution to meet our friends Dirk and Ela who are spending their holiday in Mexico, just about 3000km to the other end. After all plans failed they decide to take a plane to Baja. At the same time, Diana and old friend of Carsten arrives at the airport. Full house!! 😉 A nice group. Unfortunately the four days we share pass to fast but with some nice impressions. Highlights where, the jungle walk up in the mountains, bodysurf at las palmas beach, surf session at Cerritos, baby turtles and the spotted whales.

After their departure, we spend the next days reparing the essential of our new car and getting the paperwork done. Frida, is a 4 wheel drive van with plenty of space and drives even on the beach just sweet. What do you want more?

Once more we extend our planed stay for another week. It just doesn’t feel right to leave yet. Kathrin found a new favourite surf spot and progresses fast. Finally not to big… yeahhh.

9. November, Kathrins birthday. For days she tries already to find out any detail about „the surprise“ but there’s no way Carsten or Nic would give her a hint. The surprise was successful, she’s flyling with an „ultralight“ over Baja. More about her flight is in the next news. Dinner was traditional, „Schweinebraten, Semmelknödel and Blaukraut“, Carsten drove all the way to La Paz to get the meat… 😉 Almost like home.

Frida is ready and so are we now. We leave with ambivalent feelings. On one side we look forward to the road trip that is awaiting us, on the other side it’s hard to take leave. The time in Baja was awsome, thanks again for everything Carsten.
